Meet the Team – Doug Thompson

Doug Thompson - defense attorney at Morrise Thompson Foresta

At Morrise Thompson Foresta, our team is more than just a collection of credentials; we are individuals dedicated to making a real difference in the lives of our clients. In this installment of “Meet the Team,” we’re chatting with defense attorney Doug Thompson to discuss what led him to a career in law, what he finds most rewarding about his work, and the personal values that guide his decisions.

From Internship to Calling

The path to a legal career isn’t always a straight line. For Doug Thompson, the decision to practice law solidified during an internship with the Utah County Public Defender Association. “I wasn’t convinced that I really wanted to practice law until I started my internship,” he shared. “But very shortly after I began working with indigent clients, I knew that I could be a defense attorney and make a difference in people’s lives.” This early experience working with those in need became a powerful motivator, which shaped a career dedicated to helping individuals navigate the complexities of the legal system.

The Power of Exceeding Expectations

When asked about the most rewarding part of his job, Doug’s answer was simple and profound: “Exceeding my clients’ expectations.” For Doug, it’s not just about winning cases; it’s about delivering results that go beyond what is expected. This commitment to over-delivering is a testament to his dedication and a source of immense professional satisfaction.

Guiding Principles and Evolving Perspectives

Honesty and compassion are the cornerstones of Doug’s professional and personal life. He firmly believes “saying the hard thing up front with honesty and compassion is critical to establishing trust.” This philosophy is especially important in the legal field, where difficult conversations are often necessary. This perspective has deepened over Doug’s career, leading to a profound understanding of human nature. “I have learned that everyone, and I mean everyone, has things they’ve done that they regret,” he said. This empathy helps him connect with clients and become more credible and persuasive in his work. While the law can sometimes be arbitrary, Doug strives to ensure his approach is not.

A Passion Beyond the Courtroom

Beyond the office, Doug is driven by a unique blend of practicality and passion. One surprising fact about Doug is that he acted as his own general contractor to build his home. This hands-on approach to problem-solving and commitment to a project from start to finish mirrors his dedication to his clients’ cases.

When he needs to decompress, he finds comfort in the stunning Utah landscape. “I love looking out almost any window and finding Timpanogos,” he said. “It’s like a beacon of hope to me every time I see it.”

Advice for Aspiring Lawyers

For anyone considering a career in law, Doug’s advice is clear: “Learn as much about the actual day-to-day practice of law before making a commitment.” He emphasizes that a passion for law school doesn’t always translate to a love for the practice itself. Doug’s journey was a “happy accident,” and he encourages others to get exposure to the profession to avoid feeling trapped by the significant investment required. However, if after that exposure the interest remains, he wholeheartedly recommends the career, calling it a “wonderful experience.”
