Today, we’re kicking off our “Meet the Team” series by introducing you to one of our own, Attorney Matt Morrise. As a key member of our firm, Matt brings a unique blend of legal expertise and technical skill to the table. Beyond his work as a respected attorney, he is also a certified digital forensic investigator, a role that gives him a unique advantage in complex cases. From an early mock trial in the fourth grade to his current role helping clients through some of their most difficult moments, Matt’s journey is a testament to his dedication to justice and his commitment to our community. Let’s get to know Matt, from his professional philosophy to the experiences that shaped him.
Finding His Calling in a Mock Trial
The path to becoming a lawyer often begins with a pivotal moment, a flicker of inspiration that sets a course for the future. For Matt Morrise, that moment came in the fourth grade, not in a courtroom, but in a classroom mock trial. The case? The giant vs. Jack from “Jack and the Beanstalk” on a theft charge. Tasked with defending Jack, Matt dove into the details, building an argument that ultimately led to an acquittal. He never forgot the thrill of that successful defense and the power of using logic and persuasion to achieve a just outcome. It was then that he realized the power of the law and knew this was the path he was meant to follow.
More Than Just a Job
The legal profession is about more than just arguing cases; it’s about helping people navigate some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Every client who walks through our doors is facing a deeply personal struggle, and Matt’s goal is to be a steady hand in a time of uncertainty. The most rewarding part of Matt’s job is helping people through what may be the most difficult thing they’ve ever faced. He hopes to provide not only legal guidance but also a sense of support and empowerment, ensuring every client feels heard and understood throughout the process.
Guided by Values and a Grandmother’s Wisdom
In both his professional and personal life, Matt strives to be guided by a set of core values. In Matt’s words, “My grandmother was a saint, and I often find myself wondering what she would think about the work I’m doing. That simple question serves as a powerful moral compass, pushing me to act with integrity and compassion in every decision I make.” This foundation has also helped Matt find a healthy work-life balance. He’s learned the importance of keeping as many commitments to his family and community as he does to his job. This ensures that his life outside of the office is just as rich and fulfilling.
Lessons from Life and Law
Over the years, Matt’s perspective on justice has evolved. Early in his career, He was focused on the clear-cut notions of right and wrong. He’s since learned that justice can be far more nuanced. Now, Matt is more focused on the process, following the law, and trusting that this will ultimately lead to a just result. This lesson has been reinforced by the incredible resilience of some of his clients. “I’ve had several cases where people (or their loved ones) were the victims of terrible crimes, but they still found it in their hearts to forgive. I want to be like them.”
Finding Balance in Utah County
Matt has lived in Utah his entire life, and there’s a secret about him that might surprise people—he’s never been snow skiing! Even though Matt isn’t hitting the slopes, he still loves Utah’s natural beauty. “Utah County is an incredible playground for anyone who loves the outdoors. If you want to run, hike, bike, swim, climb, fish, camp, or hunt, it’s all just a few minutes away.” This access to nature helps Matt recharge and maintain the energy needed to be a dedicated advocate for his clients. The balance of a fulfilling career and a vibrant life is what truly makes my work here so rewarding.
